Technologies enrich and impact on the lives of people and societies globally and every day ubiquitous digital systems such as mobile and desktop devices and networks are transforming our learning, recreational activities, home life and work more and more. A deep knowledge and understanding of such information systems enables students to be creative and discerning decision-makers when they select, use and manage data, information, processes and digital systems to meet needs and shape preferred futures

This resource has been designed for educators, to support and guide them in implementing the Digital Technologies Curriculum in years 3-4, and provides invaluable opportunities for subject integration with the key learning area of The Arts, and engagement with the cross curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories.

This resource is unique in its approach to exploring data and data representation, beyond that of digital systems such as computers, and provides rich opportunities for students to engage with the world’s oldest continuous living culture.  Recognisng that data may include characters, images and sounds, students will consider how traditional Indigenous Australian artworks have been representing data through the use of symbols to retain and record significant information in their artworks for hundreds of years.  Therefore, this resource also integrates The Arts in a truly authentic and meaningful way, as students explore a range of traditional Aboriginal artworks and too provides a range of opportunities for students to work both individually and collaboratively to establish connections between the data explored in the artworks and the more abstract ways in which data is represented every day in the digital technologies students engage with.

The resource encompasses a range of learning activities, aimed to support and guide you, and other educators, in implementing the Digital Technologies curriculum within the classroom. The resources have been intentionally designed without time allocations as you should work through these learning experiences at your own pace, depending on the unique and diverse learning needs of your class. The resource has been designed progressively, with each learning experience building upon the one prior, although it does not need to function in a linear manner throughout, meaning that you can and should revisit any learning experience at any time throughout your learning journey, if you feel your students need more time on a particular concept.

It is hoped that you will use your professional judgment to make any changes to the learning experiences provided throughout this resource in order to provide a rich and engaging learning journey for your students, in which every individual has the best opportunities to experience success.
